15th July 2006 – Riley takes AAA 5000m title
Cross-country specialist Peter Riley ran a new personal best of 13 minutes 46.68 seconds to claim a surprise win in the 5,000m. Racing in a heat wave in Manchester, Riley took the AAA 5000m title ahead of Mo Farah and Nick McCormick. Riley made a decisive break 5 laps from home, at which point, the 2 favourites, Mo and Nick were “eyeing up” one another at the back of the field. Mo finished strongly with a 58 last lap, however he was still unable to close the gap on Peter. Great win by Pete, Mo finished 2nd in 13.49
